Health, nutrition and care information specific to this breed
The Chihuahua is the smallest recognised breed in the world and one of the longest-lived. Despite their tiny size — typically 1.5–3 kg — they have enormous personalities, fierce loyalty, and are fearless to the point of recklessness. They originate from Mexico and are likely descended from the ancient Techichi dog of the Toltec civilisation.
Chihuahuas live 14–17 years — one of the longest lifespans of any breed. This extended lifespan means age-related diseases have more time to develop, and consistent lifelong veterinary care is important. They come in smooth-coat and long-coat varieties with no health differences between them.
Weight Management — Proportional Significance
For a 2 kg Chihuahua, 200g of excess weight represents 10% above ideal — the equivalent of a 30 kg dog being 3 kg overweight. Precision feeding is critical. Even small pieces of treats can significantly affect daily calorie balance. Use our Chihuahua Calorie Calculator to calculate targets to within 10 kcal accuracy — this level of precision genuinely matters at this body weight.
Hypoglycaemia — Especially in Puppies
Chihuahua puppies, and even small adults, are highly susceptible to hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar), especially if meals are missed or during stress. Signs: weakness, trembling, disorientation, seizures. Keep Nutrical or honey available. Feed 3–4 small meals daily for puppies; 2 meals for adults.
Cardiac and Dental Health
Mitral valve disease, patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), and other congenital cardiac defects are more common in Chihuahuas than in most breeds. Annual cardiac auscultation is recommended. Dental disease is nearly universal — their small mouths are severely crowded and require daily brushing and regular professional dental cleans.
Common Health Conditions
Hypoglycaemia, mitral valve disease, patellar luxation, dental crowding/periodontal disease, hydrocephalus, tracheal collapse, patent ductus arteriosus.
Feeding & Nutrition
RER × 1.4–1.6 but calculated very precisely — small amounts matter. 3 meals daily for puppies; 2 for adults. Tiny stomach means small portions. Never miss meals — hypoglycaemia risk. High-quality small-breed kibble with small kibble size.
Exercise & Activity
Low-moderate: 20–30 minutes daily. Short walks and indoor play. Cold-sensitive — needs a coat below 10°C. Protect from larger dogs. Harness preferred over collar given tracheal collapse risk.
